Yokohama Air Cabin is a ropeway system with cable cars that operates in Yokohama’s seafront area, offering passengers spectacular views over the Minato Mirai district. Opened in 2021, it is now one of Yokohama’s most popular attractions. Although ropeways are common in the mountains of Japan, this is Japan’s first urban circular ropeway that operates over level ground.
The ropeway has two terminals: the Sakuragicho Station which is directly in front of the Sakuragicho railway station and the Unga Park Station in the Shinko Pier district. Over a 5-minute journey the cable cars travel a distance of 630 meters at a height of 40 meters.
The ropeway has 36 French-made cable cars which are of the gondola type. These cars have seating for 8 passengers and glass walls so that passengers can fully appreciate the seafront views. All cars are also barrier-free and are fitted with a ventilation system that uses natural air circulation and a battery-powered cooling system.
In the evening passengers can enjoy the Minato Mirai nighttime illuminations. The Air Cabin terminals and cable cars are also illuminated at night with special LED lighting displays designed by the lighting designer Motoko Ishii.
Although the ropeway is a fun way to view the city, it also offers a handy way to get to the Minato Mirai district’s main attractions. The Unga Park terminal is convenient for the World Porters shopping mall, the Cosmoworld amusement park, the Cup Noodles Museum, the Red Brick Warehouses and the Shinko Pier cruise terminal.
